James Walker and Model T

The man on the left is my great uncle, James Walker, with an unknown associate. Uncle James was stricken with polio as a child and used a low scooter that he pushed with his hands to get around. Later he used leg braces and crutches which you can see in the second photo. He worked as a jeweler and watch repairman in Gulf Port, Mississippi most of his adult life.

These photos were probably taken about 1930 in Rock Hill, SC where he grew up. From my research, the car appears to be a 1925-1927 Model T Coupe. I’m not sure if the car was my uncle’s or his friend’s. If it were my uncle’s, it would be interesting to know if the controls were modified to compensate for his disability. I don’t know if that was even possible at that time. It’s more likely he had drivers take him home from Mississippi to South Carolina, and this photo was from one of those trips.
