On Friday, the auction action was in full swing, all stops were pulled out and the dollars were flowing like water from a broken dam in Scottsdale. At one point on Friday afternoon, five auctions were taking place at the same exact time. RM, Gooding & Co., Barrett-Jackson, Russo & Steele and Silver Auctions were all putting some of the greatest collector cars over the block, an all of these sales were reporting strong sales.
Thursday we were able to witness Bonham’s second Scottsdale sale at the beautiful Westin Kierland Resort were a total of $12,237,500 with 92 of 113 lots selling. Top sale was a gorgrous Lamborghini Miura coupe hammered sold at $1,100,000.
Friday, the two power-houses for the best-of-the-best, RM Auctions and Gooding & Co. went head to head. Each house had their own very important Ferrari sports cars with RM selling its 1960 250-GT SWB Competitizione Berlinetta which set a record price for any car ever sold at any Scottsdale Auction of $7,400,000. But the record was short lived for just minutes later, Gooding & Co. sold their 1958 250-GT California LWB Spider with a hammer bid of $7,500,000, setting another record.
Overall RM reported a total of 69 of their 84 lots sold on the auction block for a healthy sale of $31,855,500, plus a 10% commission taking their total to just under $35.2 million. Gooding & Co. offered 49 lots for the first of two auction sessions with all cars reported sold except one, for a total of $25,433,000 on hammer sales.
Records prices have been reported from Barrett-Jackson and over at Russo & Steele, strong prices have been reported by several consignors who we spoke with. From our observations at Silver Auctions, this appears to be the sale where the most fun is taking place, where you don’t have to be a multi-gazillion-aire to take part.
Saturday is under way, and then the Sunday wrap-up. Wow, then it is off to Kissimmee!
