A factory customized Eddie Van Halen Porsche 911 GT3 RS and “CadMad” Cadillac lead the charge at Mecum’s Indy sale May 12-20.
When Mecum rolls into Indy for its May 12-20 sale there will be some heavy hitters that will undoubtedly turn heads. Two attention-grabbing headliners are Eddie Van Halen’s 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the 1959 Cadillac wagon custom, "CadMad" that took 10 men’s labor and 15 years to build with a build cost of $2.3million.
The Eddie Van Halen 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Eddie Van Halen’s Porsche was made with VH customized sills from the factor and comes complete with title complete with Eddies info, and a certificate of authenticity from EVH. Eddie drove and serviced it in June of 2020 close to his home per the carFax.
When Car and Driver writer David Curcurito asked Eddie what he loves about the car, Eddie responded, "For one, it's just so light. But really, it's the handling. I don't know how Porsche did it. We raced in the rain at Buttonwillow, which is my favorite track. We raced in the f---ing rain, and we never lost it, never spun out. BBI Autosport did my suspension. I set it up so you can feel it go, and you can actually slide the damn car. It's the first time ever I've been able to four-wheel-drift a Porsche. Every other Porsche I've ever had, I've spun them all. Well, every 911, anyway.”
This is a unique opportunity to purchase a car once owned by one of the greatest and innovative guitarists we have ever seen, Eddie Van Halen. This vehicle was personally custom ordered from the Porsche factory new by Eddie Van Halen. In addition, the car has a certificate of authenticity (COA) personally signed by Eddie Van Halen (Title shows Van Halen's ownership too).
The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is an ultra-high-performance car built for the street and track. The 4.0 liter flat six produces 490hp, 346 ft. lb. torque, accelerates from zero to 60 in 3.1 seconds, and has a top speed of 193mph.
About the GT3 RS:
Porsche launched the RS version of the 911 GT3 at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015. Compared to the 911 GTS, the front fenders have louvers above the wheels, and the rear fenders have Turbo-like intakes rather than an intake below the rear wing—the roof is lightweight magnesium.
The interior includes full bucket seats (based on the carbon seats of the 918 Spyder), carbon-fiber inserts, lightweight door handles, and the Club Sport Package as standard (a bolted-on roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and a six-point safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket).
Performance
Modern motorsport technology sets the tone in the 4.0-liter high-revving naturally aspirated engine: 4-valve technology, including rocker arms, rigid valve drive, forged pistons, and titanium connecting rods. In addition, the oil supply is optimized and ready for high lateral forces, thanks to dry sump lubrication with a separate engine oil tank.
The 911 GT3 RS's 4.0-liter engine with 500 PS (490 hp) and 346 lb.-ft. of torque replaced the 3.8-liter motor found in its predecessor, the 911 GT3. The transmission is PDK only. The drivetrain delivers 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds (0.6 seconds quicker than the 997 GT3 RS 4.0) and 0-200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.9 seconds.
The 991 GT3 RS also has functions such as declutching by "paddle neutral" — comparable to pressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox –- and a Pit Speed limiter button. As with the 911 GT3, there is rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with a fully variable rear axle differential lock. The Nürburgring Nordschleife time is 7 minutes and 20 seconds.
Downforce
Thanks to increased downforce and revised aerodynamics, the GT3 RS is set up for performance. The vehicle data, including longitudinal and lateral acceleration, accelerator brake pedal position and friction values, and even the position of the rear wing and front diffuser, are automatically adjusted to the driving situation in split seconds by Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) with DRS.

1959 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Custom Station Wagon
In 1959, one of the most luxurious and expensive cars on the market was the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Each of the 99 Eldorado Broughams made in 1959 were built from a specially-selected chassis that was shipped to Italy, where they were covered in hand-built four-door Pininfarina bodywork and shipped back to the States for testing and delivery to dealers. At $14,000, the car cost more than a Rolls-Royce. Fast forward nearly 50 years, and one of these rare Cadillacs becomes the basis for a wild 15-year, $2.3 million build that combines an Eldorado Brougham with a 1956 Nomad station wagon. The spare-no-expense build features a Tom Nelson Racing Engines 632 cubic-inch twin-turbo Warrior V8 making 1,025 horsepower, with the chopped and sectioned body riding on a custom space frame tubular chassis. The car is painted in a two-tone Fawntana Rose and Titanium Silver colorway, with Fawntana Rose painted interior, Recaro bucket seats from a Cadillac CTS-V, and striped tiger wood, figured maple and African wenge wood trim.
