KISSIMMEE, Fla: As day 9 of this 10-day-long auto-thon kicks off, some of the best cars ever seen at auction are preparing to cross the block today. It is believed a record number of award winning Corvettes will come under the auctioneers’ hammer today, and from what we have seen condition-wise, the #1 or #2 applies to many of them, and rarely is there a #3 among them.
The Silver Spurs Arena is filled to capacity as the high-performance auction action continues. Where most collector-car sales travel at a comfortable pace of 18-20 cars an hour, at Mecum it is more like 34-36 cars an hour. With strong results and over 340 cars a day, on average, set to cross the block, they have to move at a rapid clip.
Not every car sold has been a Corvette, a lot of interest came on Thursday evening with a 1955 Messerschmitt KR500 mini-car was hammered sold at $31,000, while of Friday we really liked a 1968 Shelby GT 500 fastback which traded hands for a bid of $91,000. Part of the road art collection to be offered today is a 427 SOHC “Cammer” engine, completely rebuilt and ready to go, price could reach the $100,000 mark!
On top of the great cars, the weather has been outstanding, picture postcard perfect, and that seems to work for Dana Mecum, the hardest working man in the industry.
