Old Cars We’d Buy That: The Pinzgauer 4×4
When you need to go under, over or just through, the Austrian made Pinzgauer might just be what the doctor ordered. We’d definitely buy that!
We found this spectacular piece of machinery for sale on a Wyoming Craigslist page. We love everything about it, but we needed to do a little homework to know exactly what we were begging our wives for.
Here's a good synopsis of this magnificent beast from John Adams-Graf, an expert on military vehicles and the editor of "Military Vehicles" magazine:
"The Pinzgauer is a military 4x4 built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. Several armies around the world used them in the 1970s and 1980s, including Austria, Switzerland. It was one of the most capable all-terrain vehicles ever made, making it an ideal candidate for rock-climbers, campers, and off-road racing. They are easy to fix. The engine is air-cooled with a pair of Zenith carbs on top. One of the cool things is that it has more than one oil pump so the engine is never starved for oil as you rock and roll over crazy terrain.
"The K variant is a the 'hard top station wagon.' With a top speed of 68 mph, you can travel on most roads, but if you want to cruise around the acreage with your friends and family, this truck is the one to do it. Need to ford a creek of up to 27 inches deep or drive over logs to get where you are going? No problem for the Pinzie."
If we are ever going to own a vehicle built in Austria, this is definitely the one we want!
