A Ferrari buy for the ages: Vintage pics of a government auctioned 1953 Ferrari Vignale Spyder
When was the last time you saw a 1953 Ferrari Vignale Spyder trailered on a hay wagon? A government auction find of a lifetime.
Ray Utter, Sr. was an early, big-time car collector. In 1956, he bought this gray 1953 Ferrari Vignale Spyder at a government auction in Austin, Texas, and hauled it home to Shawnee, Oklahoma, on a Case farm wagon. He soon removed the bumpers and road lamps and painted it red. In 1958, he sold it to Bill Lyons, of Austin, who took the car with him to Florida where it apparently deteriorated. Ray Utter, Jr. would like to know if any parts of his dad’s old Ferrari survived. If you have details on the car, email oldcars@aimmedia.com Read more about this Ferrari in the August 15, 2021, issue of Old Cars.
