Old Cars Reader Wheels: 1981 AMC Spirit GT

Old Cars spotlights a reader’s 1981 AMC Spirit GT.

Chad Queela is keeping the American Motors sprit alive with his Spirit GT. This is what he had to say about his AMC...

"I loved the recent article about the prototype Spirit AMX (November 1, 2021 issue of Old Cars). I’ve owned this Spirit for 20 years, at this point it’s a part of the family. The GT is similar to the AMX, but lacks the graphics, fender flares, and silver interior inserts of the AMX."

I’ve transplanted a Renix 4.0L fuel injected inline six to replace the original 258, an AMC Borg-Warner T-5, dual exhaust, power windows and locks with Renault-AMC keyless entry, AMC load-leveling suspension and class III tow hitch. Other original options include SEV Marchal fog lights, moonroof, Turbocast II wheels, gauge package with full console, rear and side louvres, vent shades, dual sway bars, dual remote sport mirrors and convenience and light groups. I also added hidden Bluetooth interface to the original radio, and two hidden wireless phone charging pads. It just got a stablemate, a 1982 Concord Sundancer, basically the convertible version of this car, which I’ll be restoring over the next few years."
