Old Cars Reader Wheels: 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442

Old Cars spotlights a reader’s ultimate sleeper, 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442.

Douglas Lynch might have one of the best “sleepers” out there. This is what he had to say about his 442…

"My 'Gutless Cutlass' is a wolf cloaked in 5-MPH bumpers. It decodes as a black on black 442 with a factory 455. Only 132 442s were equipped with the 455 that year. The way it is equipped makes it an even rarer car. It has swivel buckets, console and floor shifter, Rally wheels but no A/C.

I Bought the car from my friend since high school. He had treated it to a mild resto and added some personal touches like the Cutlass Supreme header panel, mild cam, headers, and an aluminum intake.

In my time with the car, added the 17-inch wheels and lowered it 2 inches all the way around with Western Suspension spindles and springs. I put in a TCI trans with a GV overdrive.

Even though it is currently 115 degrees out here in Phoenix, I cannot bring myself to put aftermarket air conditioning on the car. Just doesn't feel right. The car has 455 as part of its vin number and I just get the feeling there is someone out there who knows how this car came to be when ordered new. I would love to hear from them and maybe find the original owner to let them know she is in good hands."
