Old Cars Reader Wheels: 1973 Ford Ranchero GT
Old Cars spotlights a reader submitted 1973 Ford Ranchero GT
Bill Berry kept his promise to himself and has on heck of a Ranchero to show for it. This one will be a keeper for life! This is what he had to say about his beloved Ford…
"After a series of setbacks that forced me to sell the '68 Ranchero I restored, I promised myself that once I got back on my feet I would hunt down another Ranchero. I found this '73 GT in Chicago but it had a Georgia origin so it was nearly rust free. I headed to Chicago and bought it on the spot. It shows a previous restoration and the clear coat is peeling off, giving it a little 'patina.'
The front end was lowered (the previous owner cut off a coil) and it was getting beat up hitting speed bumps and chuck holes so I had it rebuilt with standard springs. The only other change was the addition of a Pertronix ignition.
This truck is no garage queen, getting daily use in the summer months, whether it be to haul bumpers for my classic auto parts business, helping a friend move, or to pick up supplies. I like standing out against a sea of F150s at the Home Depot. Sometimes it gets a little "show time" at local car events and shows.
Will I ever sell it in the future? Not a chance. This truck combines a battle for survival with a passion for old cars I've had since birth. I've already informed my children that they will have to pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel."
