Old Cars Reader Wheels: 1959 Ford Thunderbird Special
A Thunderbird that was made out of racing DNA. A look at a reader’s 1959 Ford Thunderbird Special.
Mike Mastalir is the proud owner of this stout '59 T-Bird. Along with great looks this car was made to go fast back in 1959.
Mike added some history behind the Thunderbird Specials as well...
"Lost through history, is the fact that the inaugural 1959 Daytona 500 was won by a 1959 Thunderbird, until overturned after a close review of the photo finish, that rewarded the win to Lee Petty. Over four inch's lower than the competition, lightweight unit body construction, and short 113" wheelbase was too much to handle for the competition. Nascar banned it for the aforementioned reasons. This one is one of 675 3:70 gear, 300 horse Thunderbird Specials that were produced 62 years ago, the car that made Holman and Moody famous."
