Rare treats in store at 2013 Arizona auctions

Heading to Scottsdale? Here is a rundown of some of the marquee cars that will be offered this year at the Arizona auctions.

The annual collector car auction extravaganza in and around Scottsdale, Ariz., during January sees most of the hobby’s big auction houses bringing the cream of the crop to the auction block.

The following is a rundown of some of the marquee cars that will be offered this year in Arizona.

Barrett-Jackson

Barrett-Jackson will return to WestWorld in Scottsdale, Ariz. Jan. 13-20 for its annual flagship auction. More than 1,000 classics, exotics, muscle cars, hot rods, resto-mods and contemporary collectibles will cross auction block at no reserve.

The 2013 auction marks the return of the company’s 5000 Series, which includes the Salon Collection and features approximately 50 coveted machines. Ranging from elite prototypes, muscle cars to Classics, the cars have been scheduled to sell on Saturday, Jan. 19, beginning at approximately 5 p.m. More information on these vehicles can be found at SalonCollection.com.

In addition to the Salon Collection, Barrett-Jackson will honor Carroll Shelby auctioning off nearly 30 Shelby automobiles at no-reserve. The group will range from a stellar 1965 GT350 (lot #5023) previously owned by Ford, to a 2012 GT500 50th Anniversary Super Snake (lot #1321) to the rarest Shelby Mustang in existence, “The Green Hornet” (lot #5022).

Barrett-Jackson will also offer a variety of other vehicles that carry Hollywood history, including

— The 1966 original #1 Batmobile (lot #5037) by renowned customizer George Barris (see related story);

— Clark Gable’s 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL “gullwing” coupe (lot #5001);

— 1919 Pierce Arrow (lot #5028) built for the famed silent movie comedian Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle.

Russo and Steele will offer an authentic 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda at its annual Scottsdale event. The car has less than 50,000 miles.

More than 700 cars and many lots of memorabilia will cross the block Jan. 16-20 at the annual Russo and Steele Scottsdale Auction.

Among the highlight cars will be:

— A 1966 Mustang Trans Am competition car that remains in its racing trim from 1967;

— A 1969 Mustang Boss 429 Mustang S-Code, one of the 279 original “S-Code” cars with Kar Kraft (KK) number 1431. This is a highly correct and rotisserie-restored, matching-numbers car;

— An original 1970 Hemi ’Cuda hardtop with 49,380 miles. The ’Cuda is one of just 284 ordered with the four-speed. It has extensive documentation, including the original build sheet, sales broadcast sheet, fender tags, original invoice and warranty card;

— 1963 Pontiac Catalina “Swiss Cheese” factory lightweight race car;

— A 1969 Yenko Camaro, one of 28 originally equipped with an automatic transmission.

Festivities will kick off Jan. 16 with the charity preview gala, with proceeds benefitting the Boys and Girls Club.

Silver Auctions

Silver Auctions will hold its annual Fort McDowell, Ariz., sale Jan. 18-19 at the Fort McDowell Resort & Casino.

Among the marquee cars scheduled to cross the block are:

— 1967 Corvette 327/four-speed with documentation;

— early-production 1965 Ford Mustang GT with its original A-Code 289 engine;

— 1957 Nash Metropolitan with 22,000 miles;

— 1957 Jaguar XK140 with new red paint and biscuit interior;

— 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible;

— 1968 Pontiac GTO with its original 400-cid, 350-hp V-8, automatic transmission and factory A/C;

— A 1966 “Monkeymobile” Pontiac GTO re-creation signed by three members of the band.

Check-in will be Thursday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. A memorabilia sale will kick off the bidding at noon on Jan. 18, followed by two days of vehicle auctions. The first cars will cross the block at about 1 p.m. Friday with bidding lasting until about 10 p.m. Saturday’s sale will begin with more memorabilia starting at 10 a.m. and vehicle sales running from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. About 350 vehicles are expected to be offered.

RM Auctions’ big annual Arizona Sale is scheduled for Jan. 18 at the Biltmore Resort & Spa in Scottsdale.

Among the highlight lots on the early consignment list are:

— A 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta ‘Competizione.’ Designed by Pinin Farina and built by Scaglietti, 250 GT is the 17th of 74 Competizione-specification SWB examples produced;

— A 1965 Ford GT40, the first GT40 production road coupe delivered to the UK. Second owner Paul Wheldon acquired the car in 1971 and raced it many times. Today, the car is restored and finished in its original factory shade of Pine Green;

— 1930 Duesenberg Model J Tourster, J-423. Found in Italy in the late 1930s, J-423 is one of eight original Toursters built by Derham during the Classic era and is offered by the Pascucci family, its caretakers for the last 45 years;

— 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24S America Spider, chassis B24S-1131;

— Matching-numbers 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 coupe, chassis 194378X419258, boasting a known ownership history from new;

— 1966 Lamborghini 350 GT, chassis 0436, with one owner for the past 35 years;

— 1941 Cadillac Series 60 Derham Special Town Car, chassis 6343167, originally owned by Bette Davis and one of only two in existence.

A preview will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with bidding starting the following day at 11 a.m. Registered bidders only will be allowed into the event. Bidder registration is $200 and includes a catalog and two admissions.

A 1972 Lamborghini Miura SV will be among the stars of the Bonhams’ Scottsdale Auction Jan. 17.

Bonhams

The Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale will play host to Bonhams’ annual Arizona auction week event. Bidding on automobilia will begin at 10:30 a.m. local time on Jan. 17. Vehicle sales will follow at 1 p.m.

More than 30 American, British and Italian cars of various vintages will be offered from the Oldenburg family collection. The prominent horse-breeding family has consigned multiple models of the same marque, including five Ferraris.

Included will be:

— The 1972 Lamborghini Miura SV with its original interior and color scheme (lustrous red with gold accents);

— 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS Spyder and the 1967 Ferrari 365 GTC Prototype. The former is one of 99 built by Maranello and the latter is a one-off created for Leopoldo Pirelli, the president of Pirelli. It was ordered new by the Milanese magnate using the existing 330 GTC body style, but with the enlarged 365 motor, fitted with handmade five-spoke magnesium wheels.

— 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE;

— 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona coupe;

— 1972 246 GT Dino coupe;

— Three Jaguar roadsters – a 1953 XK120 M, a 1957 XK140, and a 1959 XK150 S;

— A group of Fords: a 1928 Model AR pickup, a 1931 Model A Deluxe roadster, 1932 coupe hot rod, a 1937 station wagon, and highly authentic 1965 Shelby GT 350;

— 1962 Chevrolet Corvette “fuelie” roadster formerly owned by David E. Davis;

— 1956 Chevy Bel Air coupe;

— 1956 Chevy Nomad wagon.

Gooding

Gooding & Company will return to the desert Jan. 18-19 for its Scottsdale sale at the Scottsdale Fashion Square. Previews will be held Jan. 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with bidding beginning Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m.

Among the headline cars that will cross the stage:

— 1957 Maserati 150 GT Spider, a one-of-a-kind, factory-built prototype. The 1957 Maserati 150 GT Spider originates from Maserati’s celebrated racing department and later modified to become the prototype for the 300 S model;

— 1938 Bugatti 57C Atalante, chassis 57766, winner of a class award at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and a Best-of-Show at the 2012 Saratoga Invitational.

— 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster with factory Rudge wheels;

— 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra (CSX2509) unrestored with approximately 35,000 miles.
