DANVERS, Ill. - After 55 years in business, Gus Miller is looking forward to a well-earned retirement.

Miller's The Old Salvage Yard has been in business for over 55 years and is one of the few dwindling breed of vintage iron salvage yards left that have not faced their demise due to urban encroachment and the dreaded crusher. The remaining contents of the yard are now headed for the auction block.

"The lot was a bare cornfield 55 years ago…trees grew in and now it looks like a state park," Miller says. "I’m 83 and would rather sell to people who appreciate these cars rather than crushing them.” When asked how he has made it through all these years, he chuckled and said, “They have been trying to close me for 55 years and they couldn’t get the job done… I am located out in the country not bothering anybody… after awhile they finally gave up on me.”
