Morphy Auctions' January Premier Automobilia and Petroliiana sale — the second of four upcoming events featuring the Kyle Moore collection — included what offiiclals clam were two world record setting sales and topped $4.4 million in total sales.
The two-day auction featured 1,180 lots of oil- and gas-related signs, globes and pumps.
The auction tallied record-breaking sales. A Smith-o-Lene Aviation Brand gasoline sign with airplane graphics and a Musgo gasoline sign featuring an Indian in full head dress graphics surpassed their estimates and sold for $134,200 and $164,700 respectively. These were the first two times an automobilia and petroliana sign surpassed the six-figure mark at auction.
This auction's selection of car themed signs were a hit with buyers. Items featuring tires seemed to be the most popular with collectors. The sales trend of exceeding estimates continued with lot 148, a Converse Tires "A Mileage Masterpiece" sign which sold for $20,740; lot 242, a Norwalk Tires "8000 Miles" signwent for $34,160; and lot 861, a Pullman Agency sign changed hands for $21,960.
Also popular were signs featuring characters and faces. Lot 828, a rare mounted Oilzum Motor Oils sign featuring a man in a hat caught the eye of a lucky bidder and went for $75,640. Other highlights included lot 830, a Mohawk Gasoline porcelain sign featuring an Indian sold for $46,360; and lot 928, a Nourse Guaranteed Motor Oil Viking sign made its way to a new owner for $45,750.
Additional signage highlights included a lighthouse-shaped Beacon Ethyl Gasoline sign that sold for $85,400; a Texaco Gas Oil internally lighted can sign that changed hands for $80,520; and a Gillette Tires "A Bear for Wear" flange sign and Bruinoil Bruin Gasoline tin flange sign that both realized $36,600.
Globes and lenses made a solid showing. A Rainbow Gasoline Tru-Test Motor Oil lenses sold for $18,910; Sunset Gasoline lenses went for $31,720; a Hi-Fly Green Gas lens with plane graphics sold for $35,380; and a Texaco Motor Oil & Gasoline Fat Globe Body brought $23,180.
Oil cans and pumps were also key categories in this automobilia and petroliana auction. A Sinclair Opaline Motor Oil can featuring early graphics went on to sell for $7,320; and a Tokheim Model #36 ADC Showcase Computing Pump sold for $32,940.
The third installment from the Moore collection is scheduled for April 23-24.
