Old Cars runs down the highlights of the 2021 Monterey auction week
The yearly sales that take place in Monterey were back and bolder than ever. Top honors went to a 1995 McLaren F1 that was hammered sold at Gooding & Company's sale for $20.4 million. There were quite a few automobiles cracking the million dollar sales mark on California's central coast. Old Cars breaks 2021 Monterey down.
RM Sotheby’s $148 million haul leads Monterey parade
RM Sotheby’s 2021 Monterey auction, held Aug. 12-14, grossed a whopping $148,528,300 to lead all of the Pebble Beach Auction Week sales. Sell-through was 90 percent with 44 lots exceeding $1 million, 16 lots exceeding $3 million and four lots topping $5 million.
Leading the way was a 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato — one of only 19 DB4GT Zagatos built – with numerous unique features specified by the original owner. It achieved $9,520,000. The two other lots to round off the top three sellers in Monterey were the 1962 Ferrari 268 SP by Fantuzzi and 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione, both of which were offered on the second night of the sale. Each was called sold at $7,705,000.
“This is another landmark sale for RM Sotheby’s, as we achieved a sale total that ranks in the top three best Monterey auctions of all time,” said Gord Duff, global head of auctions at RM Sotheby’s, said, “... Above all, this week has demonstrated that the market is as strong today as it has ever been, with collector-grade cars finding willing new buyers from all over the globe.”
Gooding sale tops $107m; McLaren is No. 1 for week
Gooding & Company rolled up $107,045,410 in sales and had the top overall seller for the week when a 1995 McLaren F1 sold for $20,465,000. Other highlights included a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione that changed hands at $10,840,000, and a 1929 Bugatti Type 35B, which achieved $5,615,000.
Over the course of the two-day sale, 115 of 132 lots sold for an average price of $930,829 per lot. Four of those lots landed in the top 10 for all sales during Monterey Auction Week.
The F1 is the most valuable car sold at auction this year and the highest recorded sale at a public auction in the past three years.
