'Grease' carries $400,000-$600,000 estimate
Greased Lightning's Mercury co-star will be in the spotlight again during Julien's Auctions' “Hollywood Legends” auction event, set to take place June 26- 27, 2015, at the Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills, California, gallery.
The 1949 Mercury "Hell’s Chariot" custom convertible from the 1978 classic film “Grease” was originally built and customized by Eddie Paul of Customs by Eddie Paul as the Scorpions gang’s signature convertible. The film culminates with John Travolta’s character, Danny, racing against the Hell’s Chariot Mercury, driven by Danny's nemesis “Craterface,” the leader of the Scorpions gang played by Dennis Stewart. Hell’s Chariot lines up with Danny in the dry riverbed of the Los Angeles River in downtown L.A. to begin the race. Hell’s Chariot dishes out damage, rear ending Travolta’s car and cutting into its side with the Chariot’s razor hubcaps. Despite the abuse, Travolta’s car endures by Hell’s Chariot, he wins the day, the car and the girl, Sandy, played by Olivia Newton-John. The car is signed on the dashboard by Newton-John and has a pre-sale estimate of $400,000-$600,000.
Other star cars to be sold at Julien's Auctions' forthcoming sale include a Dukes of Hazzard Dodge Charger built by John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in “The Dukes of Hazzard” hit television series (CBS 1979-1985). The orange Charger has “01” painted on the doors and “Bo’s General Lee” on each side above the windows. It carries a presale estimate of $200-,000-300,000.
Schneider built four such Chargers and this is one of them. It is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Schneider stating the he built and owned the car. The car has been featured in Mopar Collector’s Guide magazine which states that this particular car appeared in several of Schneider’s commercials and starred in his film “Behind the Scenes with Bo.”
Fans of the "Fast and Furious" franchise will also be able to bid on the mustard yellow 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo used in “The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift” Universal film (2006) and signed by the car builder Dennis McCarthy. The car has “Tokyo Drift” “Universal Hollywood” and “Year One” decal stickers on the front window. It also has a “Driver: Lucas Black” sticker on the side. There are also bullet holes on the sides and a baseball lodged in the back window. It has a pre-sale estimate of $50,000-$70,000.
These and other Hollywood cars will be on public exhibition from Monday, June 22, to Friday, June 26, 2015 at Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery at 9665 Wilshire Blvd. Times are 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. PDT daily (excluding Sundays).
The sale will be held Friday, June 26, beginning at 10 a.m. PDT and on Saturday, June 27, at 10 a.m.
