San Diego’s Corvette Diner Turns 25

A San Diegio, Calif. area business called The Corvette Diner recently celebrated its 25th birthday. Because the diner had opened in 1987, the owners decided to give away 1,987 hamburgers to mark the anniversary. Response to the promotion was so good, they gave away more than 1,300. The burgers given out for free usually sell for over $9.49. They included the popular Rory Burger-with peanut butter, bacon, lettuce and tomato, as well as the classic Brenda Burger with bacon, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayonaise and pickles.
David and Lesley Cohn opened the Corvette Diner as the first of Cohn Restaurant Group’s outlets. The current location in Liberty Station is more than double the size of the original Hillcrest location. The 240-capacity building is divided into three theme rooms: 1) the Dining Car (a simulated rail car that shows old movies); 2) the Groovy Room (with a 1960 day glow décor) and 3) the Regal Room (which features a 1958 Regal Turquoise ‘Vette. The 5,000-sq.-ft. Gamers Garage is an arcade that features more than 50 games for old and young alike.
The hostesses at the Corvette Diner wear poodle skirts and the waitresses wear 1950s style uniforms and bouffant hairdos. Community relations manager Jeremy Cohn said “We hoped to expose the restaurant and showcase our award-winning menu. The anniversary was like our busiest Saturday and the last thing we wanted to do was invite everyone and then not serve all who came.”
