Lincoln, Lincoln We’ve Been Thinkin’

“For Sale! 1940. Runs and drives good! $15,500 O.B.O.”

That’s what the sign said on the windshield of the 1940 Lincoln-Zephyr that was up for sale during the Iola Old Car Show. There was a phone number, too. We took a picture of it. Unfortunately, due to the angle of the photo, the windshield wiper is covering the number. We think we know what it is, but we can’t publish an unverified number. If we were one digit off, someone would be getting lots of calls about a car they are unfamiliar with.

Even if we can’t call on the Lincoln, we sure are thinking about it. “Lincoln, Lincoln, we’ve been thinking,” we used to say when we were kids. No, we weren’t thinking about cars back then, but sometimes that’s all we think about today.

This Lincoln gave us a lot to think about. The paint looked pretty good, even if it wasn’t perfect. Considering that a paint job these days can cost around $12,000, with this Lincoln you get the expensive paint job and the car is $3,500. Well, you could look at it that way!

For $15,500 O.B.O. you’d also be getting a V-12 engine that’s claimed to run good. That makes the price just $1,291 per cylinder. Or less if you’re a good negotiator. We’re not sure that rebuilding a Lincoln V-12 at some shops might not cost $15,500 alone.

We try to control ourselves during the Iola Old Car Show days. We try to tell ourselves that we have too many projects. We don’t need another car. We don’t have any storage room left. This year the little guy in the white outfit with the halo above his head won the battle. We were good boys and kept our money in our pockets.

However, we still can’t stop thinkin’ about the Lincoln.
