Johnny Parsons won the 1950 Indy 500. As you can see from the accompanying photo, his son Johnny Parsons Jr. was winning trophies in midget car races as early as 1957. He went on to carve out a successful career driving in other venues including the 500. Now he is going to drive to the Crowne Plaza Airport Hotel in Indianapolis for the 2014 Bench Racing Weekend March 21-23.
“We are pleased to announce that Johnny Parsons will be in the hospitality suite to share memories and experiences,” Chuck Shuman and Clare Poremsky of BRW said. “Bob McConnell is also bringing the Belanger Special—a car that competed in the 1955 and 1956 Indianapolis 500s.”
The event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel & Resort near Indianapolis Airport will also feature a 1980 Lightning Cosworth that was built by FABCAR, owned by Lindsay Hopkins and driven by Gary Bettenhausen. This car is currently in pre-restored condition. The Bench Racing Weekend will be one of its first outings.
Other activities on the agenda include an Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) guided Tour. This activity is sometimes called the "Behind-the-Scenes Tour" and IMS has added features to make the 2014 tour even more interesting..
Bench Racing Weekend will have two areas in which to gather and discuss historical racing topics. Bench Racing Area A is where Bob McConnell will feature his roadster and where the 1980 Lightning Cosworth will be displayed. Bench Racing Area B is where Johnny Parsons will conduct his lively bench racing discussion. An annual reception will begin at 6 pm, followed by the banquet at 7. At 8:15 pm there will be a guest interview featuring Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee Paul Goldsmith. Bob Jenkins and Robin Miller will conduct the interview. There will also be racing movies all day, from 11 am to closing. Doak Ewing will show the movies, including many that aren’t readily available
