Your blogger is a sucker. It is so hard to pass up an interesting item like a collection of Chrysler in-house employee magazines from the late 1940s and early 1950s. There were about 25 copies of Chrysler Motors Magazine and The Chrysler Magazine in this collection and one was a special issue of The Chrysler Magazine published for the dedication of the Chrysler Proving Ground in 1954.
The opening ceremonies for the Proving Grounds included high-speed record-setting runs, a parade of 160 Chrysler-built vehicles, auto thrill shows put on by Joey Chitwood and Irish Jim Horan and a showing of 10 Chrysler dream cars. And the cover photo was a color picture of the 10 experimental cars.
These Chrysler Corporation “idea cars” reading clockwise from the center foreground were the Dodge Firearrow convertible; the Dodge Firearrow roadster; the De Soto Adventurer II; the Chrysler K-310; the De Doto Adventurer I; the Chrysler C-200; the Chrysler D’Elegance; the Chrysler Special; and the Plymouth Belmont. In the center was the Plymouth Explorer.
“While idea cars will probably not be volume produced, many of the advanced ideas developed in them find their way to cars on the production line,” said the editors of The Chrysler Magazine. They seem to have hit the nail on the head, because some of the 1954 Chrysler dream cars look a lot like some Chrysler models being sold today, 60 years later!
