To obtain the annual fall Hershey poster featuring this painting, see page 32 of this issue. This combination takes place at no other place but Hershey, Pa., every October. What sets apart the annual Antique Automobile Club of America Eastern Division National Fall Meet isn’t just the chocolate, but the sheer quantity of cars and parts and people that form an annual pilgrimage to the event simply known as “Hershey” to hobby veterans. From Oct. 7-10, the world’s largest automotive flea market will take place on the grounds of the world-famous candy producer in Hershey. This flea market is famous for more than its size — it’s the pre-eminent place to find parts for prewar vehicles, particularly brass-era cars, with a healthy mix of postwar sheet metal, trim and mechanical components. People from all around the world flood the area in hopes of finding everything from prewar project cars to postwar show trucks for sale. The event kicks off with the flea market during the day on Oct. 7, followed by the Night at the Museum gala at the nearby AACA Museum. The event includes a showing of the museum’s on-display cars, including one of the two remaining 1953 Cadillac Le Mans two-seaters of the four originally built, plus the current “The Sports Car in America” display and a showing of an unrestored 1911 Oldsmobile Limited seven-passenger touring. The car is the only completely original example of the mighty Oldsmobile Limited in existence. Each year, artist Ken Eberts commemorates the giant Hershey meet with a special work of art, which forms the basis of the event’s annual special-edition poster. This year’s work, “The Hershey Trust Company,” shows the original Hershey Trust Co. building (now the PNC Bank) in Hershey, Pa., with longtime AACA member and Classic Car Club of America founder Robert E. Turnquist and four cars from this famous Packard collector’s stable. Turnquist died earlier this year, but not before commissioning the painting, which became the 2009 poster for the Hershey event. This original work will be auctioned to benefit the AACA Museum during the gala event. The event peaks Oct. 10 when cars and trucks loaded with brilliant brass, gleaming nickel and sparkling chrome roll onto the show field for a concours-like judged event for restored, unrestored and driver-quality machines owned by members and representing all eras built at least 25 years ago.
